The problem is back then missionaries were very politicized. Look at how they dealt with the New World. Converting the locals was the first step to colonization. Then when the church gets power it starts persecuting and stamping out the indigenous religion (although in the case of the Aztecs and their human sacrifice practices maybe it wasn't such a bad thing lol). But the Japanese were correct to see them as subverters and a threat to their political order

@iippo06 I'm not religious. I just don't find Nietzsche's "become an ubermench and invent your own meaning in the absence of God or any inherited transcendent traditions" a convincing solution to the nihilism and deracination of modern times.

@a2falcone They kind of had a point. This is how rabble-rousers and demagogues operate. They rally mobs of the discontented urban poor not from compassion but to use them to overthrow the established order.

@tertiusimpostor yeah I read somewhere the conversos were heavily involved with Portugal and Spain's overseas exploits. And the Jesuit order too. You may be on to something...

@jamesongogoleczko5932 It's true I can generally tell if someone's descended from slavs, meds, germanics, scandanavians, etc. just from looking at their face. There are subtle differences. And Asians too. Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Southeast Asians, all look a bit different.
