To be fair, an E-3 in the Coast Guard does FAR more operational work than an E-3 in the Air Force. This is actually true for the whole enlisted force. Most of the USCG is enlisted work. Most units don’t even have any warrant or commissioned officers. That can be a plus or a minus, depending on your personality or unit.

@stuartkorte1642 Where did you get $400k from? Their procurement coat was $4 million and they were designed by Camarc of the UK. 174 boats were procured by the USCG.

@AL_EKs It is a self-righting design, but is not meant to work in heavy seas (surf). I believe it’s rated for 12’ seas/50 knots of wind. The 47’ Motor Life Boat exists for heavy weather rescue.

None of them were armed, which means they didn’t have marine enforcement specialists or boarding team personnel on board. That’s fine for a save, but if you have a legal issue you want a LEO present as well. Regular RB-M patrols will have LE qualified personnel with all required equipment.

@charlidog2 90% of Marines have never killed anyone. The Coast Guard are military personnel, armed, trained, and is the only branch that sees actual firearm use, in combat, at ALL times.

You know what’s funny? With all that technology, the boat still lacks a fuel tank gauge. When you’re filling it up, you do it by sound, sight, and a dipstick.

@carlbuick I’m not sure Dustin needed to mention that and it’s not really true. He has no ability to enforce inspection laws. He’s a BM, not an ME, so he can’t do a lot of LE stuff actually.

@carlbuick No, never at Siuslaw. Title 14 is very broad, but only people with boarding team member credentials or boarding officers are recognized as LEO by the federal government.

Those units may not be known to you, but they certainly aren’t “random”. They’re older than metric units are.

@AlecBrady Except imperial units are specifically appropriate to these videos as they are about a Naval service. Naval services around the world still use nautical miles, knots, fathoms, and other non-metric measurements. It’s also about a US agency which uses the metric system. It doesn’t matter where the viewer tuned in from. You don’t make a country learn the tourist’s language. And all of that LITERALLY means it isn’t weird, by the word’s definition!

These are heavy duty Diesels, not high performance gasoline or alcohol engines. Being 3/4 up the “good” range on the dipstick requires no added fuel. Overfill is actually a bigger concern.
