  1. Bots are not just digital code (although they are that too), but any systemic cyber system, even human-operated, that spreads targeted information on the internet. Russia, China and other countries literally employ individuals to act as bots on social media - post and engage posts on social media in order to spread misinformation, dilute information or simply overwhelm posters in order to reduce their online presence.
