  1.  @emilpopovic9742  Even most Russian ethnic Ukrainians who wanted more equal status for the Russian language consider themselves Ukrainian, not Russian. Ukraine had a much better standard of life than Russia did before this war. This is why Luhansk and Donbass aren’t actually declaring wanting to be a part of Russia, but independent regions. They wanted more autonomy within Ukraine.

It’s not about the statistical salaries, which are heavily swayed by Moscow and oligarchs who earn through mostly oil and gas. The Russians outside of big cities most often don’t have running water, electricity or anything else. Ukraine was able to provide all that to even the smallest villages. The poverty disparity in the two countries is stark.

  7.  @187Rajah  Putin did ask to join NATO, but that’s a ridiculous notion and was made in jest. The point of NATO is to balance power between small European states and those of the North Atlantic, against the HUGE Soviet Union/Russia. If Russia had joined NATO, it would: 1. have no reason to exist - would end and 2. would make Russia the dominating state in the alliance. That would create a de facto Russian empire and destroy all balance. All sides realized this and Putin used that logic to pursue dominance in Europe by other means. Ot is why Russia was allowed a partnership with NATO - friendliness, but not membership.

  8. Russia would declare war FAR before Ukraine ever gets to the original borders as Russia already considers Crimea as Russian territory. It would take a few hours to accept Luhansk and Donetsk into Russia, if they wanted to. If Russia starts getting properly pushed back, that will happen. However, Russia feels the pressure on all of its borders, from the Caucuses to China to NATO. It cannot afford to leave its vast Far Eastern, Southern or Northwestern regions unguarded. That limits its options in Ukraine.

They just won’t say anything outside their homes because either it will result in nothing or repercussions from the local authorities and/or supporters. It was EXACTLY the same under communism.

  19. Sadly it’d FAR from everyone, and that’s the big issue. A HUGE percentage of the Russian populous loves that this war was started. Yes, they were misled and brainwashed from… birth, really, but that’s irrelevant because they do, in fact, want this war. It’s not just Putin like so many of us believe. It isn’t certainly all Russians either, but it is a majority of Russians that support the expansion of Russian power through force. Russians are simply a pragmatic bunch, much like Trump, who believe that brute force is what gets the power, and that the ends justify the means. To be honest, historically they aren’t wrong. It’s how humans have always lived. The physically strong dominated the weak. While much of the Western want to evolve past that, most of the planet is pragmatic about it and believes that’s just not human nature. It’s a dichotomy between the “First World” and others.
