I disagree. Ukraine will never give up Kharkiv. As the second largest city in Ukraine, it is crucial to keep it. Russia knows this. It would cost Russia over 500k soldiers to do it, which it doesn’t have to spare. So what is this about? This is a chess move, and a good one. It requires Ukraine to shift reserve forces from the Kramatorsk direction, which is what Russia is actually after. They want full control of Donbas and Luhansk. That’s their self-mandate so to speak. If they achieve that, they’ll feel justified to end the war through negotiations and keeping those territories.

@mike7671 I wouldn’t say that at all. That’s a significant gain on top of Crimea.

@thephoenix756 First off, that’s a lie. It has cost them much more than 60k and fighting to take a massive city like Kharkiv will cost them around 500 to 600 thousand in losses. It’s very well protected and very densely built up. This is a city the size of Barcelona, Munich, Philadelphia, Kyoto or Córdoba.

@mike7671 You’re a man of a simple mind. That’s not how geopolitics works. Russia absolutely wins if they keep 15% of Ukraine because they originally claimed to only try to get those two regions. That means they achieve their original goals and they take a large portion of the country. They would also require Ukraine’s neutrality in any deal and that would be a win for Russia too. Piece by piece they’re taking Ukraine.

@thephoenix756 Absolutely it’s a lie and the Pentagon wasn’t the source for that number. Try again! Go actually look it up! Read it carefully this time!

@thephoenix756 It’s important to note that no official counts have been cited by the Pentagon in that article and that an article a month earlier cited that most Western intelligence agencies estimate over 100k killed. In April, the British intelligence officially confirmed that over 50k Russians have been killed that they can account for, but that lots more are likely dead that they cannot confirm. France estimates that 150k Russians have been killed so far. I tend to take the most logical view and agree that only 50-60k can be confirmed by the West, but that many more cannot be. I think 150k is too high. My guess is that actual deaths are just over 100k. Regardless, taking a city like Kharkiv would be far bloodier than anything Russia has done. Bakhmut’s population was just shy of 75,000 before the war. Kharkiv’s was 1.5 million. Think about that size difference as to the area, buildings, etc.

@annpyingshek4693 History tells me that. Kharkiv is the heart of Eastern Ukraine.
