I personally know a number of guys who’ve gone and joined the fight in Ukraine, and every one of them (that I know) joined for the same reason: they enlisted in the US at a young age and found a home and family in the military. All of them had done one of more deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan or both and while they found them difficult, they also found a purpose in the fight. Since returning they’ve separated for various reasons, but all of them did poorly in the civilian world. Many have PTSD. Many can’t keep a job. Most are now single. They went because they felt their lives had no purpose in the civilian world. These guys are not well, psychologically.

@daveward1935 You’re entitled to your “feels”. As someone with combat time on my 214, I am comfortable about saying that as it’s true. So many of us veterans need psychological and psychiatric help and don’t receive it. You not grasping or denying that is the real problem.

@specialingu All wars are messy. I don’t want to discount that they believe they’re fighting for democracy or/and the underdog. They most certainly do.
