  1. That shaft is likely w ventilation shaft. Tunnels that big and that deep need lots of air circulation. Why are such large and deep tunnels needed? To house large weapon stashes and large quantities of supplies. They’re not all that useful for fighting out of, but for long-term storage… think food, clothing, ammunition, water, fuel, etc.
