  1. Fortune cookies were invented in Japan and called “tsujiura senbei” 辻占煎餅. They were served with tea. A Japanese immigrant in San Francisco started baking them and it made its way into Chinese restaurants during WW2, when the Japanese were ostracized and sent to prison camps. The bakery that made them was called Benkyodo and the man who made them first in the US was Makoto Hagiwara. You can still find them in Kyoto and Kanazawa.

  2. Oriental Pearl That’s exactly the origin! The tea cookies (larger than modern fortune cookies) had the wish slips sticking on the side.

  6. I’m in NYC and I’ve recently gotten into the Chinese herbal teas (those red cans). They’re really refreshing in the summer!
