  1. The Comfort was misused. The whole system was misused. It was docked in the wrong part of town. It was too centralized, along with the Javits center. The Comfort should have docked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Brooklyn’s Red Hook cruise port or out in Queens, to relieve those boroughs’ hospitals. Transporting trauma stroke or coronary patients across the city would never work, so why dock it in Midtown, an area not very populated, but covered in hospitals that aren’t overcrowded? A BIG mistake.

They ended up being used for humanitarian missions as well as combat ones, but many combat ships and planes are used for humanitarian missions. The vessel is owned and managed by the US Navy, just like other logistical support ships. It is not a combat ship, but it is a military ship, with military personnel on board and defensive armament.

Comfort and Mercy provided operational capability to go where the Navy goes, on deployment, to provide large scale medical care to sailors and Marines wherever they may be fighting. In an amphibious large scale invasion, such ships are crucial. 4. Cargo ships within the USN inventory transport supplies. These ships do not. You are clearly mot knowledgeable on these ships or the US Navy. Stop commenting. You make yourself look like a fool.

The ventilation system is PERFECTLY fine for using the ship for either Covid positive or negative patients. It should not be used for mixed groups because the in-processing/triage bays are common for the whole ship. The capacity was cut to 500 beds, with 100 ICU beds, because that’s all they’re staffed for, which means there is capability built in, to contradict your previous claims and Cuomo had NOTHING to do with this. The ship is under military command of Combined Task Force - 129 (CTF-129), headed by the USN Atlantic Fleet. Cuomo requested from Trump if they could change the Javits Center hospital and the Comfort to take on Covid patients instead, and the Navy complied. Cuomo’s guidance on capacity control of large public spaces doesn’t apply to federal property/land and specifically exempts hospitals, public transport and other essential public facilities. Stop spreading misinformation! Stop the ignorance!

  9. Scallen No, you can’t. Cargo has to be secured. It’s the ocean, not a street. They already have their bays set up with beds and equipment. Why use a hospital or a submarine to transport cargo when they have cargo transports for that? Did you even think about that or do you just yap?

  11. Oliver Fasola Don’t even try it! In your OP you stated it is “A military ship for military use” and it is not. It is a military-owned, civilian ship for varied use. This is why it is a non-commissioned vessel, with a USNS title and not USS, why its operating crew are civilians and why it has the blue and gold stripes on its stack. As I stated before, “Military ship” isn’t a thing.

Thankfully, NYC is an active port city with cruise, cargo and military shops coming in all the time, meaning there are lots of places for it to dock around the city. Your comment is very indicative of someone who knows nothing about NYC. A drive from Brooklyn to where the Comfort is docked, even at full Code 3, can take well over an hour.

They were brought in to handle primary triage, emergent care, acute trauma, stroke/cardiac emergencies, natal deliveries and emergency surgeries. They were brought in to alleviate some of NYC hospitals from doing those things, so that those hospitals would take in Covid patients ONLY. However, the logistics of that don’t work in NYC. I would have placed it in the Red Hook Cruise terminal. The facility has the needed depth and perimeter security in place, electrical, fresh water and sanitation connections, proximity to the Gowanus/BQE to serve everything from Elmhurst to Coney Island hospitals and be in an area where many hospitals had closed in the last decade, leaving residents under-served. It would be within a few minutes’ drive from about 13 major hospitals that are currently overrun. As for one hour trips... you clearly have ZERO medical knowledge. Look up what the “golden hour” rule is. Stop spreading ignorance and false information!

  18. Shane H WRONG! 2 days ago, the Comfort CO approved the request to start (in the future) to accept Covid-19 patients at a maximum of 500 person capacity. You are NOT doing research. Also, as a matter of fact, one single sailor on each of the ships has tested positive so far, from random tests. Both sailors never had contact with the public in NY or LA and it’s believed both had become infected before their deployments. Other crew members who had contact with those two sailors were isolated as a precaution. Are you incapable of reading comprehension? No wonder you didn’t link those articles! You never actually read them! Don’t worry though...   19. Lorg Porg That was the intent originally, yes, but logistically it’s proving impossible to do because the ships are far removed from the residential areas where the patients need the help. Ambulances cannot drive for an hour and a half to take a patient with a stroke to a ship across the city/county. They go to the closest hospital, as they should. That’s why between the two ships, they’ve treated under 50 patients so far, total. That, in turn, creates an impression, to some, that the hospitals are doing just fine (which they aren’t.)

  21. Jonathan Brown So much writing with so little actual knowledge. Incredible!!! First off, those ships have multiple separate HVAC systems, though negative pressure rooms were never built. Second, the hospital ships, like all cruise ships, use HEPA standard filters that filter out viruses the size of SARS-CoV-2. The spread aboard ships is due to individual contact, not HVAC systems. Also, stop using terms like “black flow”, “back vent”. HVAC isn’t plumbing. It’s not how that works! You’re demonstrating concern, but definitely not knowledge.

  30. Jonathan Brown This ship is made of steel. Even if the entire ship is infected, it can very easily be disinfected. Viruses don’t last long and are easily killed on surfaces. It’s not an issue except for proper protection of the crew. They are able to convert the ship for infectious disease treatment, but only at half capacity. It was designed for it as a precaution. Biological and chemical weapons were a consideration when it was built and updated.

  33. Oliver Fasola No... varied use as it was designed for humanitarian medical missions during war and peace time. They were delivered in the mid-1980s, during the cold war. They were designed after Vietnam, to specifically be able to deliver medical aid to third world nations as good will (to thwart communism). Stop spreading false information already!
