In the USSR the “Loaf” was used in the military, as a rural ambulance, by utility companies, police and fire, and as rescue services. They were mostly used in rural areas, so in cities you didn’t see them as often, but they were generally very common and came in all kinds of body configurations, including stake bed truck, box truck, crew cab truck, cargo van, passenger van, ambulance, etc. Not sure why he put a V8 into this… a modern I4 would have served it well I think. It can’t go fast either way.

@ No, it’s not the same aa it was 50 years ago. Some things had been modernized over the years, and this thing is actually incredibly reliable. It’s slow, ugly, loud, very uncomfortable and unsafe in a collision, but it’s very capable off-road and incredibly reliable.

@ Exactly. Nothing destroys the suspension like 600lbs of extra weight. You could also do all of the maintenance from the cab on the 2.7 I4, but with this V8 it’s flat out impossible. The original had 112hp and 153 lb/ft of torque, but any modern 2.5 would give you far more. The V8 is stupid.

@ I’m not sure you’ve read anything I said. Putting in a basic Toyota, Honda VTEC, or even a Nissan I4 would work just fine and there are tons of parts for them. So why any V8 at all? Shock value?

@ I don’t know what the market for it would be… It can’t really go on the highway and it doesn’t meet ANY modern safety standards. It has no ABS, no crumple zones, no side impact beams, no airbags, etc. Even Kei vans wouldn’t sell here and they’re far more livable. Amy service that wants these capabilities can use 4x4 Transits or Sprinters or pick-ups.

@ It comes when filling it with liquids, adjusting cooling to fit it and putting in a heavier tranny. What they have here is a disaster because they’ve done none of that work.

@ They definitely existed in cities, but mostly they are (and were) used in rural areas, but back during the Soviet days there were a lot more of them everywhere, for sure. They didn’t have a lot of choices in vans back then, domestic or foreign. They only had two types of minivans, this and the RAF-2203.

@ The PAZ and KAVZ were actually small commercial buses, not minivans. In Moscow and St Petersburg you just didn’t see all that many Bukhankas. If you lived in smaller cities, especially out east then for sure. I am from St Pete.

This car was made to drive on slow roads like major city streets, town cobblestone streets, and country single-lane roads, plus they are roomy enough for actual families with seating for four and a decent trunk. They handled rough roads brilliantly and they could be repaired roadside with ease.

You’re wrong, buddy. You’re wrong because you’re confused. It is the 240D that is the taxi special in Africa (to this day) and is still very valuable, even in the US, not the 300D. The 240 has nothing power and no turbo. It runs on anything except gasoline. It’ll even run on motor oil. It is indestructible. The 300D was faster? but the turbo overheated a lot. Not nearly as reliable or famous as the 240D.

John G oh yeah... it was slow as hell. 0-60 in hours. Still though, that’s the indestructible model everyone seeks. Everything was on vacuum tubes, even power door locks.

This is an amazing historic car, and it’s absolutely iconic, but… It’s not a DS, and ultimately the DS is always the most iconic Citroen.

@ I agree, but I doubt they’d want (or could get) another Russian engine and obviously parts would be an issue. Finding an NA 4-cylinder otherwise wouldn’t be all that difficult and it would still have more power.

@ Diesel fuel was never subsidized the way it was in Europe, so its prices were always much higher and offset any savings. Diesels were loud and slow. Without fuel savings there was no market for them. They tried selling them, but it never took off.

@ Well… We had some European Diesel imports. VW, Mercedes, Volvo, Audi, and Peugeot all sold Diesels in the US. Mercedes and VW did so consistently for over 4 decades. Just not in large numbers. Those were all considerably louder and had a lot of vibrations compared to their gasoline alternatives. The US is also a lot more open highway driving where horsepower is the key, not torque, and gasoline was always cheap, so any savings you could get out of a Diesel were tiny. If fuel was 1/5th the price in Europe people wouldn’t have chosen Diesels there either.

@ Maybe, but they’re still being phased out because of their NOX emissions and maintenance requirements and Diesel fuel is still about 30% more expensive than regular gasoline.
