Likely he got a Bronze Star with a V. Most SF guys did. The Silver Star requirements are a bit higher, but spec ops guys earned both awards almost on the daily.

It’s funny because it’s true and completely the opposite at the same time. You lose time awareness in close combat because you have too many things happening at the same time, too many decisions to make, and too many concerns to notice the time passing. Time truly is relative. Our brains need something to compare our perception against. So each minute may last forever in our brains, but 18 hours pass like 1.

@chrisdemario2636 In remember once going against my Capt (O-3) when I was an E-4 on a technical call and being an inch away from NJP’d, when my top intervened by pulling the Capt away for a minute. The top came back with my supervisor, an E-7, and my squadron commander, a Major, who then patted me on the shoulder and said I will be teaching the Capt how to do the task for the next week. Thankfully the Capt turned out to be a nice guy and his ego wasn’t bruised, and at the end of that week we both came away with an appreciation for our jobs, and differing viewpoints.

@chrisdemario2636 Totally, but the military makes it very difficult to do, usually ending very poorly for you, even if you’re 100% correct. I’ve seen NJPs boiled down to, “you were 100% correct, but don’t talk back.”

@papimaximus95 Europeans fight just as well as Americans do. I fought alongside Brits, Poles, Norwegians, Germans, Danes, etc. and they were just as proficient and deadly. Laissez-faire means letting things be as they were. This is how armies have been fighting for centuries. American tactics and strategies all came out of Europe. The US special operations were created to pattern the British, who wrote all books on the subject. You’re the ignorant one here.

@papimaximus95 All you know is movies, quite obviously. Over there, men like myself actually fought alongside Danes, Brits, Norwegians, Poles, Spaniards, Italians and others, while you sat on your ass watching movies.

@tubab72 No one said it was a strategic term. It isn’t, however, an economic or social term. It is simply a French term. It has had a political approach after it. You’re also wrong about the German Army (Nazis was a political party). The German Army had very much adapted a free-thinking approach, giving wide latitude to junior officers and NCO. You also have a very limited knowledge of how the US Army was organized and how it fought against the British in the late 1700s, with a lack if commissioned officers and a heavy reliance on Sergeants and Corporals, whom also came from the French. Before the Penninsular War, the British relied heavily on Sergeants for morale and supplies, but little during infantry engagements, as they were done almost exclusively on the battalion level. As such, battalion officers controlled the movements and firing rates between the (usually) two lines. That changed after the Napoleonic Wars. The US military generally has a French military culture. It’s very centralized and institutionalized.

@alfarouqaminufor3892 I don’t know if he made a conscientious decision to go for the pistol or if training coupled with instinct kicked in… my guess is the latter, but that’s why these guys are SPECIAL forces. I likely wouldn’t have done the same and gone home in a box.

@CosmicFckUp Perhaps. I know that I was taught that if I have a malfunction, I need to work through that malfunction. I’d be trying to get the turret to turn until I’d be dead. Of course I wasn’t special forces.

@wesleykim1758 Leadership does not mean running into a burning house first. Leadership is listening to those with more experience and using their successes and mistakes to formulate your decisions. As such, as a junior officer, you are to solicit input from ALL NCOs in your command and decide which of them just gave you the best advice. It is NOT to come up with your own ideas when you clearly lack tactical experience and knowledge. This is why the modern military, at least in the US, requires junior commissioned officers to have senior NCO mentors. ROTC doesn’t teach you real world tactics, and it sure as hell doesn’t teach you how to get a bunch of “old” grunts to follow your 22 year-old ROTC ass. In fact, they won’t. But if you listen to your NCO and respect their experience, he/she will respect you, and will listen to you. They will all follow the NCO, and then hence, you.

@papimaximus95 He did. As I’ve already said, the Europeans created the NCO corps long before America even existed, and focused them to lead at the small unit, tactical level. The US military was patterned on the combination of British and French militaries. So, yes, keeping it as it has been for centuries is “laissez-faire.”

@rikaardyyz I think half of your comment is just hate for the US, which has nothing to do with your point and only detracts from it. You know who were alongside the US invading Iraq? Your beloved British Army, the RAF, the SAS, Australia and Poland. Oh and as soon as you pick up a rifle and shoot it, you stop being a civilian and start being a combatant. That’s according to the Geneva Conventions. Also, using children as human shields to cover your planning and storage facilities was a common practice in Iraq, and is illegal by the Geneva Conventions. That same Apache pilot didn’t know the children were in there when he fired. If he had, he wouldn’t have fired. What was he supposed to say otherwise? War is not a video game (all you know in life).

@samleyton5316 You do understand that Napoleon came AFTER the US Army was created? Regardless of what you personally think about the French Army (very clearly ignorantly, seeing your examples), the US Army was absolutely based on the French and for a good reason. They had been beating back the English for a long time and helped the US gain their independence, fighting the British and Hessen troops.

@tangoindiamike9189 Wow… I believe it. I have a friend who was a battalion level TACP who was attached to the 10th Mtn from Drum I believe, and had a similar effect in combat in AFG because he had much better situational awareness as he was parked up on top of a mountain over the valley they were in. Although I think it was just a company that he “commanded” in that instance. That said, those are all rare instances where a CO had enough brains to make the right call and not enough ego to make it about rank. And yes CBs are badass. A unit came to my base to work with our Red Horse unit and a lot of drinking ensued.
