  1. “Pirog” means “cake” in Russian. These are “pirozhki” or “little cakes”. Specifically, a pirog is a cake (sweet or savory) made of dough surrounding a stuffing. What we know as a traditional cake in the US would be called a “tort”. Pirozhki (pl.) have two general varieties: baked or fried (deep fried). Belyash is a popular version of a fried pirozhok (s.) with ground beef and onions. Pirozhki can be made with all kinds of stuffing. Chicken, beef, cabbage, potato, egg/scallion, cherry, apple, etc. are very common.
