These are literally the most reliable transmission systems in the world right now, and you can see why.

@MaximC It has NO chain! Did you watch the video? Toyota’s eCVT are planetary gear sets, not CVTs.

@MaximC Meh… the Toyota timing chains, despite having higher loads on them, were good for the life of the car. It wasn’t unless you did a head gasket that you’d change them. They’re very heavy duty with no lateral movement. The CVT chains are something very different and are prone to failure because they’re more like belts and have lots of lateral movement. All Toyota hybrids have above average reliability, even higher than Toyota non-hybrids.

@MaximC I think you need to actually listen to the specifics of what is being said and demonstrated. That ring gear had a chain that connected it to the idler. It wasn’t changed to anything more direct. It was changed to another planetary gear set. The video is very clear about it. There were no known defects in that chain as it was not a drive chain. It was changed because of efficiency of the 2nd generation system.

@MaximC I think you have NO idea what you’re talking about or reading. You’re mixing up timing belts/chains with CVT belts/chains with eCVTs. They’re all completely different things. Also, who the F is Jason Arthur Taylor and why should I give a shit about his opinion? Timing belts/chains have been around for well over 60 years. We have a pretty good idea of what they are, how they work and how long they last.

@MaximC They aren’t less reliable.

It’s more durable than any automatic transmission too!

@hedgehogthesonic3181 Yup, Which is why I got a Rav4 Hybrid.

@hedgehogthesonic3181 Sure! In the winter (NY) I was getting around 33mpg due to the engine having to turn on to keep the coolant hot. Now that I have the cabin heat off most of the time, I’m getting about 40mpgs, mostly city (NYC) driving. I think it would do 43-45 in the suburbs if gently driven. I do drive it in ECO most of the time. It’s slower, noticeably, but sufficient. I pop it into Sport to merge onto highways. It’s REALLY fast then. Its biggest drawback is fairly hard seats. They feel like those new slimline airline seats with no padding. The biggest plus I’d say is how crazy quiet it is.

@hedgehogthesonic3181 Well I have a 2021, so mine came with a lithium-ion battery. Cleaning its filter is key. The engine has dual injection, so that’s good. I do wish it had adjustable regen braking though... paddles like on the Prime would be great. Still, 40mpg in an AWD CUV is nothing to sneeze at. Not having any AWD system components is another benefit many don’t consider. No transaxle, no clutches, no plates or PTUs... No hassles. The dynamo just spins away.

@kevinbothwell8425 No, YOU’RE being a dick here, and you’re trolling.

I’m curious... the heat in my Rav4 hybrid seems to come solely from the ICE cooling system. So does the engine also run when the HVAC system directs it to, depending on the engine temperature? Does it try to run at those most efficient RPMs at that point too? I don’t see much engine RPM difference in almost any conditions.

@martinmartin5904 your onboard computer would never allow it. Plus, how would it even charge? On the hybrid, it charges off the hybrid battery and gives up excess energy/heat back to the generator motor. Without those, it wouldn't work.
