Given that the UA are moving, successfully, in a Southeast direction from Kharkiv, if Russia continues moving straight West in that area, they risk a major encirclement. A dumb move made by dumb people.

@M_eye_d_s_tinks Not only that, but actual WMDs were found in Iraq during the war. US troops DID find chem artillery shells, just not newly made ones.

@regu6582 Absolutely, but that’s an oversimplification. Russia had a political hold on Ukraine since the days of the USSR until 2011. At that time, having an “independent”, “democratic” (in reality it was really neither) nation was a huge benefit to Russia. It legitimized it as a country favored by its neighbors. The year prior, Russia showed what happens to those who are disloyal by invading Georgia and taking Abkhazia. It was a signal to Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan (this was after the Kyrgyzstan renewing the lease for Manas AB to the US in 2009). The annexation of Crimea was a move to get a foothold on the Black Sea, which again sends that signal to Georgia and Ukraine. Then Putin moved on Eastern Ukraine as a result of the Maidan Revolution and a change in government toward a completely pro-Western one. Putin saw that as a personal betrayal because he lost all influence. So while Ukraine was legally independent in 2011, what we’re seeing is a war for an ACTUAL independence now.

@RichardTaylor1630 You’re right because I meant to say Southeast, but my phone autocorrected because I fly a lot.

@johnnysgaminglab2126 You are wrong, and have been corrected.

@owenb8636 He’s not rationalizing anything. He’s drawing attention to the fact that Russia is rationalizing. Are you really that daft?

@shakibulhasan2379 The US isn’t in any proxy war as the US isn’t fighting it nor started it. Shakibul, did you forget that your name is male, but you’re hiding behind a fake photo? Let me guess… you’re Taliban.
1
@rahulmaron That’s factually false and Iraq and Afghanistan have nothing in common except timing.

@johnnysgaminglab2126 No, there was not. A third party cannot hold (legally) a referendum in a foreign nation. A country cannot hold referendums while occupying the territory either, as it’s not a free and fair process. Finally, there was no actual voting. My friend’s family who live in a village outside of Donetsk, under Russian control, were told “you already voted, don’t worry and thanks” when they showed up to the poll site.

@regu6582 You’re referring to the Kievan Rus. That was neither Ukraine nor Russia. The Rus was destroyed by the Mongol invasion. Ukraine didn’t become a country until much later (1918), as most parts of what it currently is remained under the control of Lithuania, Poland and Russia.
1
@johnnysgaminglab2126 No buddy, it’s war. Actual war.

@eggsbenedict2251 Russia has been building a nationalist desire to recreate their former empire - take over other nations and people (which is what an empire is) for decades. Ot started in the late 1990s. It has NOTHING to do with Europe or NATO. You can’t antagonize a country into annexing others.
1
@badnoxin3851 You’re ABSOLUTELY wrong, ill informed, and a simpleton. NO ONE in Ukraine wanted to join Russia or “the West” whatever that means. They ALL wanted to stay an independent nation. However, there was a political struggle as to which geopolitical and financial side to side with, Russia or the West. Side with, not join. Moscow kept forcing its own candidates for power to make sure Ukraine stayed under its influence. The people them revolted, TWICE, and won. The people CHOSE to move forward and become a global country, side with democracy, free enterprise and the rest of Europe.

@ericconnor8419 That’s false. Taliban never made such an offer.

@Kitzo978 Being that I’m 1/4 Russian, 1/4 Belarussian and 1/2 Ukrainian, and born and raised in St. Petersburg, I’d say I’ve been an expert my whole life - over 40 years. You?

@Thetequilashooter1 Most commenter “experts” on here weren’t even alive back then, don’t remember the first Gulf war, don’t know about the no-fly zones and don’t know what was going on prior to the invasion of Iraq. They’re also too stupid to understand the difference between an invasion and an annexation. They try to draw parallels without knowing actual facts, which always comes across like oversimplified bullshit that has little semblance to reality.

@cowboybob7093 It’s true. The Soviets sent anyone who can mine to Donbas. This forced homogenization was done all over the Soviet Union and in China as well.
