You start realizing how important Free Speech is when subtle laws start being put in place to control it. In certain European countries like France you can be jailed for criticizing the President on social media under certain hospices; pretty sure the people who were happy about hate speech being punishable by law did not realize the slippery slope they were opening themselves too. The government doesn't care that certain words or rhetoric might hurt some of their constituants; however, the prospect of being able to control speech under the guise of protecting "oppressed" groups is extremely appealing because of the unlimited potential for thought policing it opens to them.
