@euphoricr Fair question. He's just quoted (accurately?). If he wrote something himself explaining it, it does not survive. We have what other people wrote. Why not something from his own hand? Here's my two cents: God's OK with us reading and writing about God, but what God wants most with each of us, is being welcomed into our thoughts and actions, not as our own conscience, but as a distinct and separate Being, not of our invention, now and going forward. Another quote, perhaps related, "The Kingdom of God is within you." When Jesus said those words about himself, he was alive and local to the person(s) hearing it. That is not our case today. We wonder if "spirit" is real. His proposal in essence is, discern the truth about yourself, and love one another, and God will show up in your life. Worth a try?

The young are sometimes earnest to gain and prove competency, or show allegiance to the group that sustains them. If that includes reading and learning, holy writ could easily become a framework of understanding that supports competence and cultivates loyalty. Life experiences can lead to new perspectives on the holy writ and other held beliefs. Yet other minds are oriented towards victory, and learning and faith are structured to support victory, and truth can be subordinated to the system of thought and speech that supports winning. Explaining life comprehensively is not a goal in their life. But at any age, the Creator may inject divine presence and thought into every human being, inviting the possibility of "walking with God." Would it be just if only the most learned, or the most victorious, could do that?

@onezerooneo I am smiling. My wife is a teacher. My parents were teachers. My brother is a teacher. Your choice of words sounds a lot like them, and I like them. Yet, "good" and "best" are subjects of "religion", no? Are you advising youth to reserve their full confidence in a particular religion until they have had due time and experience to validate it? How might that work in the parent-child relationship when the parent has placed full confidence in a religion? Does a competent exercise of critical thinking ever arrive at an established religion? I enjoy your thoughtful posts.

@euphoricr If we are honest about our imperfection, and we care about each other, we invite God into our life. God enters our thinking. This is something each of us can try.
