  1. Ukraine has indicated it is ready to make a deal. It is Russia that has decided to try to improve its negotiating position by continuing the war. And Russia wants a great deal out of this war. I fear the only thing that stops it is massive aid to Ukrainian forces so they can reduce the Russian army to ineffectiveness and vulnerability to further reduction. That is not yet where this war is. If we allow the Ukrainian army to be reduced too much, they will have no choice but to retreat to a position they can sustainably defend, a small "West Ukraine" tucked against a few NATO member states. The loss of Odessa would be tragic.
