Actually Mr. Putin, you sound desperate and lacking finesse. Makes us think you are rather nervous about your prospects and legacy. Makes us think the more pressure we put on you, the more you might be willing to make a fair deal with Ukraine. Do you really want to be the man that ended Russia and civilization? Not so far. You've always had the power. I think the West needs to see this as Putin signaling that he would like to stop being weakened and is ready to have his whole Siloviki see that the West is going to turn the war against them and he is the man to make the deal and be honored for it. The West has chosen to drag this out rather than escalating it to resolution. Most probably have seen that as both a safe path and a way to put Russia on the same self-defeating track the Soviet Union was on, i.e., absurd percent GDP spent on the military and all the negative economic consequences that go with that. Couple that with increasing subsidized Western oil production to displace some of his sales to India and he is going to be ready to settle for now. He is talking to the Russians who keep him in power.

Almost confirms that Putin does not believe in any kind of afterlife in which he would face consequences for his actions. So far he shows he prefers to stay alive. Better to push on him now than when he is near death.
