Maybe when Russia and Belarus hold exercises on the Latvian border, Latvia, at least in computer simulation style, practices preparatory evacuation of non-combatants. Like working with EU countries and their hotels and Air B&B's, moving people out on planes, boats, buses, and trains and bringing NATO troops, intelligence agents, and supplies in. Maybe there is a lottery for government supported "vacations" just to try out some of the logistics at small scale so lessons are learned beforehand. And remember, get out of any part of a city that does not have a good bunker. Health care goes underground.

@goodlife6277 Moldova ceding Transnistria would address three issues: 1) The EU statute referenced as obstructing Moldovan integration would no longer apply and Moldova could proceed with further integration with the West; 2) Ukraine would be free to attrit Russian forces in Transnistria, reducing that threat to its security; 3) Ukraine would be free to deport Russian colonists from Transnistria, removing that common pretext for Russian interference outside of its recognized borders. Thereafter, Moldovan integration would strengthen its ability to resist further Russian colonization, perhaps even leading to the recovery of Transnistria if the parties agree.

But the Russian tactic is to blow up your house and water and power from 15km or more away, or from an APC or a tank 1km away. Then they are just waiting for you, probably with better optics and night vision, when you go out and try to find them. Best kit a civilian could have is a long range sniper rifle and seriously practice with it, or help haul 155mm shells to drone supported artillery batteries and keep the gunners fed and watered.

Agreed. It all seems about drone based ISR and artillery or other precision fires now. Estonia, unlike Ukraine, could get targeting data from NATO F35s early on. They would need it.

Counter-battery radar is everything when they decide to stand back 15km and just shell the windows, potholes, and trees. You need to be able to find those artillery batteries fast and shoot back or its dead city time. NATO F35s can help prevent that.

@martinsedolfs3311 Surface ships are starting to look like tanks. Susceptible to being targeted by drones and taken out by missiles on trucks. NATO will not have the precision fires deficit that Ukraine has.

Rather than gaining my confidence, you lose it, and you put it up here for any reader to see. This is the self-defeating nature of Russian ideology. It starts with its own inability to accept its own imperfection. The shame of that is so intolerable that huge amounts of energy and words are expended to rationalize a misbelief in one's own innocence. Donald Trump is an outstanding example of this personality trait, and so is Vladimir Putin. They proclaim a veneer of purity but know inside that they are snakes. They prey upon the majority with conscience to feed their boundless appetite for victory. I do not deny that this conflict is a conflict between empires with third parties striving for some agency and freedom for themselves in the midst of it. Psychopathy is spread throughout the human race. The challenge to the common person is to devise and support systems that carve freedom out of the midst of these remorseless control freaks. Please do not serve them.

Is Latvia selling oil and gas to Germany? Ukraine's getting the treatment because it was getting poised to take a big bite out of Russia's fossil fuel market share of Europe. Russian Army behavior in Ukraine lines up pretty well with those resources there. All those Wagner mercenaries looking forward to the spoils of war.
