The only way to stop the war anytime soon probably involves taking the situation to a nuclear brink. The West could take the approach of not sending troops and sending Ukraine nuclear weapons instead. It puts Russia right back to the 1994 Budapest Memorandum: Ukraine would be non-nuclear as long as Russia respected its territorial integrity. I am sure the scenario would make Putin feel so important and flattered he might actually agree on a fair deal. The path to peace is to start negotiations while arming Ukraine and moving Western troops into position to support Ukraine. Putin seems to be signaling for the kind of standout legacy he wants. But he is not going to make a deal until he is losing Ukrainian territory too fast. He will keep the war going as long as he is moving forward.

I hope the multi-year program to get Ukraine F-16 and even F-35 squadrons started months ago. This has been and is likely to continue to be a multi-year war. Ukraine will need to have a very serious air force to deter Russia in the future. If we haven't started yet, then we need to get started now, be it English language tutoring for Ukrainian pilots or Russian/Ukrainian language tutoring for NATO instructors. There are a lot of Ukrainians in the US right now sharpening up their English skills while retaining their Russian/Ukrainian language skills. I know some.

Mitt Romney for Speaker. The Dems should put him in with 10 Republicans.

Pro-life Floridians can vote for Peter Sonski, American Solidarity Party.

@Mman. That's saying you are OK with more months and years of war. Or you like to imagine Ukraine just giving up.

He needs to consider that it makes him sound desperate.

If nothing else, this is a signal that Putin is open to both sides meeting to present each other with their latest wish lists. Rather than dismissing Putin's wish list, Ukraine should just present theirs, too, even if both sides essentially already know what the other wants. Just setting up the logistics for talks is helpful. One area that might get more extensive discussion is attacks on civilian electric utility systems. Ukraine could point out this war crime and put on the table its own potential retaliation against the Russian electric utility system if these attacks do not stop. The two sides would have to consider their gain or loss of domestic support and moral authority on this humanitarian issue. Russia has a robust electric utility system for Moscow and St. Petersburg, but other areas are more vulnerable and get very cold in the winter. Ukraine needs these attacks to stop so it can be ready for winter. Russia is going to need missiles to attack bases with incoming F-16s soon anyway. This could be a very interesting discussion that could lead to another topic for productive negotiations that could start on the path to an armistice someday, although the circumstances and interests indicate this conflict could be many more years long. Russia is looking to offset a rising China and feels a need to accumulate power. It does not imagine itself as a member of a community of nations so much as seeing itself as necessarily dominant. That is its psychopathic handicap.

@1Fracino Good points. Thank you.

MItt Romney for Speaker. Republican. Temporary. Character. Presidential candidate stature. Will do it for the good of the country. The Dems should see him as their best outcome and vote for him unanimously with no conditions other than keeping an open door. Ought to be able to find 6 to 10 Republicans to go along with that.

@davidwitherington7689 I think there are pro-life voters who are looking for an alternative to Donald Trump. Peter Sonski is an alternative.

@b.c8437 Insightful.

@Mman. Putin bets on your fear. War is uncomfortable and precipitous. What we are seeing are the effects of the West playing it safe by calibrating aid while lives are spent. "There's a choice were making. We're saving our own lives".

@jeremiahchapman9288 That's just it. He will not stay past January 2025.

This explains all the bizarre political behavior?

North Korea didn't start the war until the Soviet Union had proven nuclear weapons of its own. MAD had started.
