Typical water and wastewater plants can be operated by diesel 300kW to 2MW standby generators, which can be provided in shipping containers. Pumping and lift stations associated with those plants can typically be powered by smaller standby generators. The resulting system is so distributed that it is very difficult to keep out of service by the bombardment campaigns we have seen Russia execute. Damage to plant pumps, pipes, and tanks takes more time to repair. Plants typically are modular, meaning they have multiple processing lines to allow a line to be taken out of service for maintenance while the other lines maintain output, and can be modified to be more resilient under war conditions.
