  2. You are right. The American MIC still has a lot of political clout. It's generally Republican. So Trump has to kowtow to it. The more Europeans talk about manufacturing their own weaponry instead of buying US, the more political pressure the MIC will put on Trump for reducing sales. Trump is showing he has not thought through all there is to think through. Go ahead and start talking about cancelling any options for future purchases. South Korea might be a quietly interested supplier. Australia could reassess its submarine purchases. This will have an effect.

  12. Europe needed time and money to recover from WWII. Western Europe needed a better quality of life to show Eastern Europe that the Soviet way of life was not the best. Europe has recovered. Russia will never be militarily weaker than they are now. It's time to directly help Ukraine. They really need the cavalry to show up.

  14. Part of the post WWII strategy to contain communism was to have a Western Europe with a better quality of life than the Warsaw Pact countries. Minimizing military spending was part of the way to do that. The US provided European security while Western European nations rebuilt their economies. Europeans got used to that, even though today they might consider their countries to be 99 percent reconstructed. What might be important right now, is for European countries to demonstrate to Russia that they will fight. The Russian military is close to the weakest it is every going to be barring its dissolution. If there was a time for Europe to demonstrate the will to fight Russia, then it is now or very soon.

Here are there I would see a lot of development on the Chinese side, while on the Russian side there would be very little development.
