  2. I think the US policy on Ukraine is very much a team effort, with a wide variety of inputs. There is a segment of American power that does not have a big problem spending Ukrainian lives to weaken Russia while keeping the risk of nuclear war as low as possible. Russia is being weakened, and Ukrainians are dying in significant numbers, and Putin talks a lot about nuclear weapons but doesn't use them. American diplomats have probably explained to some degree how the US and others can respond to the use of Russian nuclear weapons that makes things more difficult for Putin. The obvious thing the West can do is deploy its airpower in support of Ukraine. If Türkiye is agreeable, that support could include western naval forces.
