  2.  @6789uiop  Rational, maybe. Not very reasonable, too mystic and nostalgic. Look at Russia in Venezuela. Venezuela has huge oil reserves. Russia has not helped Venezuela get back to its prior 3 million bbl per day production and strengthen the Venezuelan economy when they really need that to happen. Why? That would be competition in Russia's most important market, the oil market. Exxon, Chevron, and Shell were in Ukraine with their high-tech exploration and extraction capabilities that Russia cannot match. Ukraine was on its way to taking a slice of Russia's share of the European oil and gas market. Putin could not let that happen. It would weaken his regime as it is now being weakened. He didn't think the latter was going to happen.

  5. Gripen is a great plane, and I feel good about Sweden and its pilots retaining them. I hope new Ukrainian pilots are quietly preparing to be trained in the F-35B, which, like Gripen, can operate from dispersed, small bases, plus it has stealth features. Gripen is still better than the F-35 in maintainability. In the long run, Ukraine needs the F-35 and to be a part of the large NATO support system for it and its capacity for NATO munitions. Perhaps NATO will support the proliferation of the Gripen, again an excellent aircraft that reflects very well on Swedish engineering.

  6.  @Nidrog  Ukraine is on its heels. European nations need to consider sending their planes with their own pilots, crews and munitions. Putin might be ready to settle more quickly under such circumstances. He's doing a lot to scare away European leaders . . . because he fears loss almost more than anything else.
