  2.  @Cheeke_Monkey  Good point, and the US population might be kept in the loop if there is European competition in the production of standard parts. We Americans pay a serious premium for our defense products, and the consolidation of major defense companies has made it worse. The US debt problem will increasingly force Congress to push back on defense industry lobbyists. There is opportunity for European manufacturers, and, as the US and Israel do, there is opportunity for technological exchange to continuously improve the quality of weaponry.
