  1. I support NATO and good trade relations between the US and Europe, because the US needs that trade. But year after year, most European governments dismissed American encouragement to boost their defense spending. In a sense, their politically convenient policies are a form of isolationism.

  2. The dilemma for a portion of American wealth in a democracy is to assemble enough voters to obtain their next round of tax cuts and new laws in their favor. This requires degrading the quality of US public education and thus the critical thinking skills of the populace, poisoning American minds with various forms of pollution, creating a variety of cultural tensions, and using religious issues. Bear in mind there is another portion of American wealth that is generally politically positive, and another that is almost exclusively focused on achievement. American wealth is also involved in shaping both major political parties. The message of American wealth to the Biden administration has been: Ukraine is not worth escalations that draw near to nuclear war. They are fine with a safe measure of degradation of the Russian military as that can obtain another chapter of stability in areas of their interest. American government debt and credit is becoming a concern because a primary source of new wealth has been to convert that credit into private wealth. A problem they face is that economic growth that would help with that debt is most easily dealt with through immigration. I expect American public relations to take a turn in that direction. The doors will probably be opened to the Ukrainians to come to the United States, where some have already started to fit in quite well. They miss home, but their children are becoming Americans.

  3. Ukraine cannot rebuild large central power plants until it has very good security. And even if that ever becomes the case, Ukraine would be well advised to build now and for the future a distributed generation system of hundreds of stationary and mobile gas turbines, stationary and mobile diesel generators, solar farms, small hydro plants, and wind turbines. Ukraine should also increase the number of transmission and sub-transmission interties with friendly neighbors. Putin was very shrewd whatever his role in putting the world's eyes on Gaza while he crushes Ukraine. US oil producers should be delighted at the market prices going up as Russia's refineries go down. Good job, Jake. Keep going.

  4. American politics has successfully harnessed American resentment of European governments that have neglected defense. Putin's rhetorical machine reinforces it, and he appears quite capable of getting useful idiots for free, or for money, or through quiet threats. Take care for the security of your own politicians lest they too become useful idiots for Putin.
