He reached out to the people who put him in office, and he is trying to reach out to all Americans, in his way and his speechwriters' way.  I think if he senses the public is putting up a strong boundary on an issue, and they are respectful while they present it to him, he will respond with some level of respect for the boundary.  He is hypersensitive to respect or the lack thereof.  It is both a flaw in him and a clue as to how to work with him.  I'd recommend the left state their positions in a very respectful manner, and they might be pleased and surprised to see him open up to making a deal.  He has succeeded to his extent because he can adjust to realities he comes to see he cannot change.  As long as he senses our respect, we can put issues of disagreement in front of him, because he does know that success does rely on understanding the firm boundaries.  It's about respect and success.  The particulars can be negotiated with this guy.  There might be more on the table than one first thinks.

  6. I very much respect Colonels and Navy Captains. I would not promote one directly to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This is the problem with President Trump's SCOTUS appointments. He has biased his picks for longevity of partisan influence and his own legacy. He has bypassed well qualified appellate justices in order to attempt to set up implicit transactions with "his" appointees and court his base, to the detriment of the best possible jurisprudence. This is a defect of the federal court system as set up by Congress. Military officers generally have minimum years to be served in each rank. There should be minimum years of service as a federal judge before this kind of appointment. The analogy in Justice Barrett's case is something like this: You graduated in the top 5% of your class from the Naval Academy. You taught there for 15 years. You served well as a surface fleet officer for three years. Your next assignment is Captain of an aircraft carrier. Wha? None of them had the humility to decline. They think themselves courageous, answering the call. "That's just great . . . God save us all", thinks the crew.
