  1. I very much respect Colonels and Navy Captains. I would not promote one directly to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This is the problem with President Trump's SCOTUS appointments. He has biased his picks for longevity of partisan influence and his own legacy. He has bypassed well qualified appellate justices in order to attempt to set up implicit transactions with "his" appointees and court his base, to the detriment of the best possible jurisprudence. This is a defect of the federal court system as set up by Congress. Military officers generally have minimum years to be served in each rank. There should be minimum years of service as a federal judge before this kind of appointment. The analogy in Justice Barrett's case is something like this: You graduated in the top 5% of your class from the Naval Academy. You taught there for 15 years. You served well as a surface fleet officer for three years. Your next assignment is Captain of an aircraft carrier. Wha? None of them had the humility to decline. They think themselves courageous, answering the call. "That's just great . . . God save us all", thinks the crew.
