  1. Why not ask why unconditional surrender was required? What was the discussion about the necessity of regime change in 1945 Japan? Was the discussion of the unconditional surrender requirement very similar for Germany and Italy?

  2.  @usul573  And the unconditional surrender meant key personnel of the defeated regime were no longer to be key personnel in the government. The very character of the leadership had to go through Allied supervised change. And for the common soldier, that meant fighting and maybe dying until the Allies achieved that capability to control their opponent.
