@ There is something to designing a job that sufficiently satisfies both employer and employee. It's a hard thing to do, which is a measure of the skill and value of the employer. Think of the cotton combine. It used to be necessary to have slaves pick cotton to satisfy the employer's sense of what he deserved. Now a cotton combine makes the slaves unnecessary and the sale of cotton is still a going concern. Yes, a union can ask for too much, and they should be shown how their ask is detrimental to the company as a whole. At that point, automations and other efficiencies need to become a part of the negotiations because the high wages can only be supported if the workforce is smaller and automation is economical. The trend toward greater automation is likely to speed up with the application of AI and improved robotics. Rather than stopping that trend, citizens of advanced societies should have forced savings accounts that include stock ownership of highly automated corporations. It doesn't get one out of work, but it can prevent destitution. Such accounts can offset the coming reduction of Social Security benefits in the 2030s. See the Center for Economic and Social Justice, Economic Democracy Act.

And when the baby boomers and their Social Security checks pass on, the State will start to have a very hard time.
