  1. I don't know that there was ever a good withdrawal scenario. Did the absolute best one happen? Probably not. What the Taliban know is that after 9/11, which they indirectly supported, we punished them for 20 years. I think they know we could punish them again. I think we are too concerned with the "recognition" issue. Our conditions might have included a potent embassy and consulates plainly in place for monitoring Afghanistan, and that every incident of interference in that monitoring would result in punishment. They are the kind of enemy you keep closer to you than a friend. However, that is a scenario that would include casualties and tense situations, with risk of escalation always present. Being totally out has its advantages. We are saving money, and we have more forces available for the tension in the Pacific. China now has to be more mindful of Afghanistan.
