Three administrations and more Congresses prior to this one had the opportunity to fund and administer a just SIV program starting as soon as Afghans working with the United States came under Taliban threats. However, those SIVs and their families would probably be Muslim, and a large percentage of the American population does not want Muslim immigrants. In the last administration, Steven Miller worked to slow this immigration, even while Secretary Pompeo negotiated a withdrawal agreement. How much simpler it would have been to get many SIVs out while the US and Afghan government controlled more of the country. But the speakers in this press conference are mostly focused on the evacuation of Americans, a problem with unique circumstances for each (including mixed feelings about leaving), that will probably stretch into the 2022 election campaign and perhaps beyond if relations with the Taliban deteriorate and American nationals living in Afghanistan become hostages. This is selective and partisan rhetoric, not the whole truth.
