  1. I would think the research aided current capabilities in horizontal drilling for oil and gas. Directional boring is a common technique for installing small (<9") diameter conduits in developed areas. I have participated in larger bores of 36". Generally the small bores are done within a day. The larger ones take days to go 60 feet or so under a railway for example. Watched a job that needed a guy with a jack hammer at the end of the casing to get through rock under a rail line.
