  4. It's a place that, even with its nuclear weapons, weakens its people, humiliates them with constant tests of their fealty to the state and its leader. I would encourage American leadership to stand behind South Korea and its efforts to de-escalate tensions. We need a quiet but clear presence there to keep the Russian and Chinese empires on notice that the DMZ remains the line not to cross. Our military exercises with South Korea should be proportional to North Korea's exercises but also to its emphasis on high military personnel numbers. We should not simply stop exercises, that feeds North Korea's sense of progress on achieving unification on its terms. We should only reduce those exercises if the North also does so. They can also stop their occasional micro aggressions like kidnapping Japanese and sinking SK ships.
