For most people from Central and Eastern Europe, especially from a bit older generations (like over 40 years old), I think the difference between "Republic" and so-called "Democratic People's Republic" is obvious. Because all the communist states, at the times of the Iron Curtain in Europe, were also called like that - so the People's Republics. And in all the communist constitutions there were also such phrases as "people's democracy" or "proletariat's dictatorship" and other rubbish - because in fact it was just one big lie, in communist countries there was no democracy at all, and these were also ordinary people, including workers, who wanted so much the communism to fall (which finally was possible in 1989).

About ordinary people confusing people coming from one nation with other nations, probably in most cases it's not really intentional, or racist, just ignorant - which can however be indeed very annoying. And You are right that people coming from Slavic nations hate being confused by anyone, anyhow with Russians (or their language being confused with Russian as well). But confusing states with each other at such a formal occasion is a completely different situation, because such events should be carefully prepared in advance and well organized, and such ignorant errors just shouldn't happen there.

@holoinfinity4691 It's a bit surprising that people in the US have such attitude as You say - taking also into account that they, as a nation and a state, have different origins and system of acquiring citizenship (so-called "ius soli" rule, so by birth at the US territory) than in many other countries, being historically ethnically more homogenous. So it's obvious that in country having such origins and rules about citizenship like the US, there are people whose ancestors came there from all over the world, but they all became a part of one nation. So it's understandable that assuming, just by someone's ethnicity, that they cannot speak English or are not American can ideed be regarded as very rude. It all just shows ignorance of people and unfortunately, as You've mentioned above, flaws in education of many people (not only in the US) about the world, geography, history and different cultures. But actually it happens also in Asian countries as well. For instance, I watch sometimes the channel of an American YouTuber "Oriental Pearl", and she is so often called by various passersby (especially in China, but in other Asian countries probably it happens as well) "a Russian" - just because she is blond, while in half of Europe, in so many nations, there are people with blond hair as well. So something like this unfortunately may happen everywhere, to many people (of different races, nationalities or ethnicities). But it's definitely not pleasant. After all, each nation has it's own identity, history (sometimes also much difficult relations with other nations of a region), traditions and culture - so it's understandable that no one wants to be confused (intentionally or not) with other nations/ethnicities, being so much different. And as You wrote, especially at such an international event it's indeed really shameful for the organizers.

@Hope-Angel It's not just "unaware". It's ignorance and not caring at all to find anything about the surrounding world. And for sure, something like this shouldn't happen during the official worlwide ceremonies (it's great faux-pas).

I didn't like this whole Opening Ceremony at all. It was chaotic, in my opinion it was quite depressing, so definitely not like it should be, just totally inappropriate for such a ceremony, in many ways. Previous opening ceremonies, at earlier olympics, that I've watched were much better. And about confusing NK and SK - it was a mistake, but such ignorant mistake just shouldn't happen at such a formal occassion as the Olympics Opening Ceremony.

@holoinfinity4691 I think that also sad is when people coming from "mixed" families, so having parents from two different races/nations/ethnicieties are treated like they are not entitled to be a real part of any nation. Yeah, these are difficult issues and generally people should try to be less ignorant and more considerate about that.

@Wandrative You mix completely different terms here - so ethnicity and state, which is not the same. And these are two, completely different, separate states (also as subjects of public international law). And it's also a huge difference, being under totalitarian, communist regime and dictatorships as in NK or living in a developed, democratic state as SK. So that's obvious that they shouldn't be mistaken with each other.

@Wandrative I agree it's not racism. But definitely it's not baseless - anyone who knows anything about such totalitarian states and regimes understands it. And also at such international events there is representation of states (like also in diplomacy and foreign relations), not of nationans or ethnic groups. That's why it is a significant faux-pas.

All communist states, previously existing (also in Europe) and current, were using such names in their communist constitutions - so they were called the "People's Republic" and using such phrases as "People's democracy". Which was of course just a lie, because there was no democracy there at all.

It may be true only about part of Europe, definitely not about all the European countries. Half of Europe, so Central and Eastern European countries that for 50 years were under the communist regimes understands many things much better. For instance here, I think that for most people from Central and Eastern European countries the difference about the SK and NK official names was quite obvious.

It's enough to know this difference. Because being a totalitarian, communist state under such dictatorship as the North Korean one and a democratic, developed state is an ENORMOUS difference.
