The little girl was wearing a Disney Princess-type costume, the boy (I assume was a boy) was dressed up in a full Darth Vader suit. Hilarious seeing a 4ft tall Dark Lord of Sith running round the fruit counter and oddly despite wearing a mask the kid didn't drop dead of oxygen starvation.

Was co-presented by Julian Clary, who is a very camp gay comedian who always wore make-up on screen and specialised in smutty double-entendre jokes. His co-presenter was a straight male DJ but Clary used to get the most fan mail off straight women. He'd even get teenage girls sending him letters asking if they could try and 'convert' him to straight. 😆

  10. Was reported a few weeks ago in Britain that the biggest sufferers from Long Covid are healthcare workers followed by... teachers. While Conservatives are being smug about 'covid doesn't kill that many kids' they completely forget that it spreads to adults the kids are close to. In the past we understood this hence the likes of the Rubella vaccine, but now, not so much.

Surgeons & other medical staff, industrial painters, soldiers in the desert, special forces types throwing flash bangs about, semiconductor fabrication workers, clean room engineers, microbiologists, police forensic officers, asbestos removal guys, fighter pilots, divers, zoologists, some parts of the food preparation industry and so on. So by and large millions of pretty good jobs have always required mask/PPE wearing or else you can't do them full stop. Now in fiction who wears masks? Superheroes, bandits, attendees at aristocratic sex parties, comedic wrestlers, citizens living in a polluted post-apocalyptic big city hellscape... Over the past couple of years mask-wearing was also a big thing is protest movements - wearing a mask makes it harder for the facial recognition spooks to identify you. So where the hell did all this 'masks are for pussies', 'masks are a sign of deference to authority' nonsense come from when only 18 months ago they were a symbol of fighting the oppressive state in places like China? Am thinking the memes were manufactured by the usual crowd building on their Colin Kaepernick attacks. Remember how the guy was kneeling as a simple gesture of solidarity and the right turned it into 'I will not take the knee' rants like they were in Game of Thrones or some shit? Yeah. Is that.

Have heard the term 'performative masculinity', i.e. putting on a show on what 'being a man' is supposedly about and it really does describe so many of these guys who appear to have zero confidence in themselves so need to boast constantly about how tough they are. I remember seeing a Royal Marine unarmed combat display once. You had these dudes who literally are trained killers doing a show in front of a stunned audience where they're attacking each other with baseball bats, knives, waving guns around and doing stuff that looked like what you'd see in an action movie. The most telling thing was the guys all looked completely average and nondescript. Normal blokes who could walk past you in the street but you wouldn't pay attention to or be intimidated by them. I bet those blokes have confidence in their masculinity and don't feel the need to tell everyone about their manly tattoo or how much they like chopping wood while eating bacon.

  20. There was a doctor in the 1800s called Ignaz Semmelweis. He theorised that disease was being spread in hospitals by staff not washing their hands. At the time this was a massively controversial take and he was hounded by his peers and ended up dying in a mental hospital. A few years later Pasteur produced his work on germ theory and it became apparent why Semmelweis was completely correct all along. We don't teach two year olds about hospitals in the 1800s, but we do teach them to wash their hands when they go the bathroom & that germs are bad and kids quickly learn to do that with occasional parental intervention. Same deal with masks - is a bit uncomfortable but once they get into a routine they'll be fine. Adult dickheads - not so much.
