If you arent, dont forget that creepy minister who a few decades ago entrapped and murdered disciples in South America--JIM JONES & JONESTOWN. He was a psychopath but even when not, I wouldnt go off to a place anywhere that ID HAVE to convert, and I AM CATHOLIC.

  3. What does that mean except you hear and listen to too much gossip. All religions have people who do things not right. Look at Gandhi and Mohammed? D ont know about Buddha but that doesnt mean gossip wasnt out there.

  4. Mother thought since they endured poverty so well, even seemed to relish it, they were holy people, the poor . Remember too the caste system! It was going quite as usual then. Indians except Gandhi, didnt complain. The Indians didnt stop it except for the Mahatma and maybe Nehru. British didnt invent the "Untouchables." A lot of people welcomed the British. They helped the economy of India. Not straightforward, history. Like people, a mixed lot.

  5. Not American propaganda. A lot of people still are her fans. She did help a lot of people. Im not sure she forced conversion. Poor people were grateful. Its like some people convert to a spouse's religion. I dont think you should do that because it usually isn't sincere. My dad did that but died a secular vet of cancer. I never heard a word about religion from him. He always said what was convenient. You never could believe him.

I dont know. Wed give up dessert or whole meal's for lent but no hair shirts or like St Francis walking out on dad with just minimal rags. I think it started in imitating Christ.   11. That isnt HER saying about our suffering and Jesus' suffering. We were told in Catholic Church that we should offer our suffering up with Our Lord's as making up for others' sins and our own to God It ISNT bad. It is very holy to do and is done voluntarily like fasting during lent. It is sacrifice and voluntary. You people hate it because it is Catholic and you dont understand it. It isnt fanatical either. Each person can only be as good as he is capable of being in his own way. It might be doing without things you want--possessions or parties, a film you give up for the evening or a meal--some pleasure. It might be fasting or doing kindnesses. So, what is wrong with that?! It is voluntary!

They were misguided, yes. That is not evil . they all practiced difficult sacrifices. It isnt right or good but born in practically Victorian era, they thought the more sacrifice and fasting for all, the better for them all. Moderation is key. But you know how Luther became a priest? His mom or dad probably dedicated him. Its how those old timers of middleages to late Victorian era people were.

Hopefully you wont come out bigotted. I know those people meant well.I went with a friend. It just wasnt for me.

Not only that but she IS dead and has been so for awhile and you cant be sure of your condemnation of her. There is more proof of her goodness from so many who were there. In fact, Im grateful--grateful for the attitudes that showed me why I do believe as I do. So, thank you. Maybe it will help me,Ian in time. I dug out my Bible. I have a half dozen and Im no Karen or any of that. Even though I'm far from atheist or agnostic, I have a long way to go. I don't consider myself better than others. I feel luckier in a way, but it is a long hard path quite narrow and steep. So, I'm also not lucky as I wasn't raised by strong believers who were loving or consistent. Its not pain either nor myths. You believe what you wish--all of you. Good luck with that, whatever you are looking for or not, all of you.

Be christian Catholic or protestant, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish or Muslin. Your choice. But make being good the real choice!

But the hate part hasnt materialized, just a bit of questioning motives sometimes for certain actions. Im No Gandhi,and Im no Mohammed. You expect too much from the internet. And I see most of this as probably or possibly useless but time-filling chatter, and venting. Making a difference? Doubtful at best. Just remember: friends not made in a day, only acquaintances.
