  3. China was never much of a naval power (the Ming-era Zheng He voyages being the main exception), classically sticking to being a land-based empire that was kind of scared of the sea. Hence their surprise when Westernized fleets came in force from their east (not just as isolated traders and pirates), and why the Qing court tried to put as many water features between subsequent foreign concessions and the rest of China.

Hence why there’s arguably more intact Chinese history and culture in Taiwan, where the KMT didn’t institute an obliteration of its past.
