There really should be term and age limits for elected positions, and no special support programs for former officeholders that regular citizens can't access.

SS rates should really only be a payment based on current contributions, not a fixed promise. And no cap on the contribution by the richer earners who have been taking practically all the growth in wealth since PCs started replacing typewriters.

While extreme, it is true that investment in the youth is far more profitable in the long term than in increasingly expensive terminal support for the aged. Problem is politicians and their supporters want returns in 2~3 years, not 20~30.

America's global security presence is the main reason for worldwide prosperity. If we draw down and let "multipolarity" take over, it just introduces multiple fault lines of conflict (including extremely destructive industrialized interstate wars). Both World Wars and 9/11 showed we can only isolate and demobilize so much before an enemy comes to us at home.

Boomers still dominate politics, especially now as retirees when work and kids no longer distract them from TV and voting. If anything things will first get worse because their voting consistency will attract more political attention to their expensive terminal benefits at the expense of everything else the government needs to budget for.
