Ironically real autopilot on planes and boats only handle preset directions and speeds, in an environment where other vessels are detectable (often themselves actively broadcasting their positions) for miles around. It's not so useful on roads where obstacles pop up randomly with at best a few seconds to react.

I wouldn't deem any car at Level 5 until it can consistently negotiate the constant chaos of India's roads. No human driver is really replaced until all human driving is superseded, including in crowded developing countries and their not-so-California climate.

More like it is capitalism in California because of incumbent landed NIMBYs who want to keep their house prices inflated; it's defense of market dominance since all the cheap flat land is already taken. California homes are both more costly and under threat as new developments are pushed farther from urban centers where the labor and resources are readily available increasingly deeper into winding wildfire territory.

I can't even get a Roomba (which also use only cameras) to run until the room is bright enough to where I can see too. And then it still bumps into things with considerable speed even if it knows something is usually there. Lidar is just better at avoiding collisions. Hence why I switched to a non-Roomba robovac, and why I don't trust riding in a Tesla especially at night.
