Comments by "Doncarlo" (@doujinflip) on "Why America’s Most Controversial Military Bases Exist" video.
The unit commanders and MPs try, but they can only lock down so much before you get revolts from the spouses and children trapped on base, the outside vendors whose business revolves around valuable dollars coming from that base, and the general embitterment that quickly leads to more severe crimes and shenanigans for being restricted from normal civilian life outside without suitable justification.

Yeah Japan isn't as crime-free as we're led to believe. The high conviction rate comes from selectively prosecuting cases with easily found evidence or easily coerced confessions.

Many of them are also empty fields especially in Africa. They're just included because of periodic training exercises with the locals.

Those are more local policy problems, created by NIMBYs who vote against densification and public transit projects to inflate their own home prices.

@gavinrose5971 Right, if anything the largely private-run utility of America's healthcare is the worst example of wasteful "big government".
2
@tombo416 Not as much as how anxious and remorseful they get if we leave. They'd only have to ask Iraq (ISIS), Afghanistan (Taliban), and the Philippines (China).
2
State control went away, but the cultural effects have lasted.

Only because the builds are new, they also fall apart disturbingly fast. I've lived in Subsaharan Africa, and even the locals were alarmed at how little concrete and rebar went into Chinese projects.

@MarvinPowell1 More like decentralized privatization of what should be a public utility.
1
The world might not like America, but they fear what happens to their sovereignty and economy if the Yankees go home. Just as Iraq (ISIS), Afghanistan (Taliban) and the Philippines (China).

American bases bring valuable US Dollars into the area, both through local service contracts and from off-base spending by the soldiers and their families. It's like a permanent source of foreign tourists, who although sometimes raunchy also readily police themselves too. And they'll also decisively engage anyone who threatens you or your friends. America doesn't have foreign bases because nobody else is willing to spend the enormous amounts needed to be just as effective at preventing local conflicts from exploding into industrial interstate warfare.

Also notice how Philippine sovereignty claims wasn't challenged by China until after Manila ejected American forces in the 1990s.
1
Right, if anything American hegemony is what's preventing regional conflicts from exploding into industrial interstate warfare. Ukraine is only a taste of what happens where Americans aren't.
1
Africans choose to have American business. And Russian and British and French and increasingly Chinese too.
1
Colonies are extractive. Last I checked Americans pay for local services abroad quite handsomely.
1
Universal healthcare pretty much requires a government takeover. The mess we "enjoy" today is a result of decentralized privatized practices of what in reality acts like a public utility.

@johnnygraves4118 It's already going to the people. Social Security and Medicare are massive money drains that basically benefit just the retired. Defense at least provides jobs for younger citizens.

Have you seen what the rest of nature does? They'll go on genocidal rampages because you literally smell different. Humans are relatively peaceful by comparison especially compared to our pre-industrial selves, we just made tools that can quickly end whole communities and ironically that threat gets us to even moreso sit down and talk instead.
1
Don't vote Republicans, they'll just deregulate corporations even further meaning even more competition for houses against well-cashed investor groups.
1
Apparently the road was temporarily closed during the exercise, the girls decided to trespass anyway as a shortcut.
1
US bases are there because the host nation wants them there. They're useful because they bring valuable dollars from what are effectively permanent tourists, and even where the Americans are hated they're a convenient lightning rod to redirect domestic political issues upon.

Russians do airlift vodka though. Their TU-22 bombers use what's basically vodka as its air conditioning refrigerant.
