  1. I'd imagine that the Soviets would have taken Hokkaido anyway, possibly dipping into Honshu itself and creating a Communist North Japan. To this day there is still no actual peace treaty between Japan and Russia.

  2. Right, the atom bombs were a warning that they could cheaply wipe out a lot of Japanese people. A true cleansing though would've involved boots on the ground.
