  1. Drones need to know where to look first, and be able to communicate the whole way. Remember the US is also top dog in electronic warfare, and for larger targets their radar arrays nowadays can output so much power that they double as sensor fryers.

  5. Orbital bombardment isn’t that efficient, a Rod has to literally fight all the energy that brought it into orbit in the first place. Plus if it goes too fast (easily achieved from space) the impact counterintuitively becomes shallower, having spent more energy in vaporizing at the surface rather than moving earth underneath.

  6. They don’t necessarily have to get “feet dry” over China, just close enough to launch their own stealthy cruise missiles (bombers rarely drop actual gravity bombs nowadays). That tyranny of distance works in both directions, with PLAAF sorties becoming increasingly under threat as they get closer to America’s allies and the air defenses they’ve deployed.
