It's too big and less effective from the ground. Part of the effectiveness comes from lobbing the rounds from above where the armor is weaker and the target is bigger.

Apaches are even more vulnerable, having neither the range or durability of a Hog. F35s don't have the payload to take out an entire company of enemy assets, and have to be more selective of what they target (i.e. early warning radars). A10s would be the ones duking it out with the bulk of enemy shooters, especially if SEAD support lets them get close enough to break inside the minimum range of advanced SAM systems and render them targets.

They do fire back, and the A-10 was designed to be specifically more survivable when hit, landing safely with battle damage not seen since WWII. What matters more is how much fire they can toss up, especially when a dedicated ground attacker is raining down.

The Su-25 is really the only other CAS platform out there, but it's also more dependent on its wing-mounted ordinance than its autocannon. Mind you the ones fielding the Frogfoot were also providing tanks and vehicles, so its design philosophy was not as independent from the type of combat it was expected to see.

That's because the A-10 is a primarily gun with a very rugged and repairable plane built around it, and is what it fires most often because of the often visual nature of its CAS missions. Even its closest Soviet counterpart Su-25 wasn't built specifically for its autocannon.

If it gets shot down though, which is a considerably bigger if with the A10. America has a lot of practice doing SEAD, and advanced long-range SAMs also have a minimum distance before they become targets themselves. Some newer SAMs are designed for close-in killing of drone swarms, but drones are light and disposable whereas it might have to expend most of its loadout downing one A10 (granted one was ballsy enough to go with guns instead of knocking it with a missile).

@majungasaurusaaaa Right, the F35 can help surgically blind the air defenses so that an A10 can mop up and take out the more numerous launchers and support vehicles before another long range radar makes it in.
