China is still not as automated as the US, and with multiple countries' worth of an undereducated population to keep politically contented with jobs it's not as incentivized to improve labor efficiency at the cost of entry-level jobs -- if you notice what China sells a lot of them are noticeably the same design with varying quality and random branding stickered onto them, pointing to a strategy that still favors volume and raw market share over the innovation and niche-finding that actually pulls out of the middle-income trap by amplifying the efforts of fewer specialists. The US isn't as concerned with providing make-work jobs as with profitability, hence why the Rust Belt and dead company towns exist while at the same time productivity per worker is not only way ahead of China but also the gap keeps growing.
