I'd wager the lack of good storytelling comes from experiencing the post-9/11 era and its depictions on the news, where battlefields no longer have a "front line", you're not really safe even within the wire, and the only way to peacefully resolve a conflict is by knowing and negotiating with every competing interest down to the individual level. Strict categories are no longer precise enough to navigate today's world, even though those simplifications are what the human brain seeks and rewards.
