Right, when economists talk about the “demographic collapse” they mean that of young, skilled, and mobile workers. The senior surge only makes it worse because their dominance in politics just prioritizes funding retiree benefits often at the cost of support for the youth and young families.

@ad_astra468 That’s if you trust the official numbers Beijing puts out, independent estimates put China’s debt load at more like 2-3x its GDP and still growing. Even with all that money it’s still malinvested into infrastructure to nowhere (oversupply means no need for new industrial parks and workers to man them) and housing complexes nobody wants to buy (out of fear of dropping prices afterward), as the Party can’t afford to empower the Chinese people as consumers out of fear of ultimately empowering them politically.
