Can you ride your car when the fuel tank is dry? That's why you should keep owning a horse. Early cars also had the challenge of regularly finding gas pumps early on. It took a couple decades and an Interstate Highway System to resolve. EVs if anything can get adopted quicker because the roads are already built, and chargers can be wired in practically anywhere since there's no HAZMAT considerations that gas stations require.

It wasn't as much the technology as the industrialization of what was a cottage industry, forcing WFH laborers into factories where they have no say about their hours or pay. While amazingly productive, it was also incredibly abusive until the rise of labor unions a century ago.

That will change as more EVs demand more and faster chargers, which are easier to install because they don't have all the HAZMAT requirements of a gas station. Remember it also took some decades to get us off our literal horses due to the rarity of cars and fuel points.

Not sure about the fossil-dependent Northeast, but the West is on track to resolve this issue on its own with wider adoption of local solar and wind production (reducing demand on the wider regional grid) along with smart chargers that can automatically reduce its power draw as meter rates increase for whatever reason.

I just moved to the Middle East where gas is cheap and I'm still considering an EV, mainly because of the almost nonexistent maintenance... and thus no need to search for garages who won't try to upcharge and scam you for the quality of work they don't provide.

Workers don't get paid when furloughed or laid off. Meanwhile it's not so easy to not pay specific shareholders when convenient; shareholders aren't on the hook for company debts; and shareholders are practically never dependent on just that one company for its income unlike the workers.

Tbf the Luddites were WFH artisans who were against the idea of being told to report to factories for longer hours at less pay and safety. It took another century before the rise of labor unions started balancing all those insane profits back towards the workers.

That's mainly because Chinese themselves aren't buying EVs, or much of anything that isn't consumable or disposable. There's a glut of Chinese EVs at the moment that are ready for export to those places that will certify them for the roads (i.e. not rich high-speed nations who require the most stringent safety standards).

It's what American and Chinese cars have in common: being a garage hog 🐷🔧
