  2. 80/20 rule: if you're not in the top 20% for attention (and ultimately compensation), you're in the 80% dismissed as not worth the time and getting left behind. This is especially severe in Japan and Korea where society has a narrow view of what's considered an respectable occupation, so there's few alternatives to explore if you're not competitive in those few life paths.
