I think the Philippines was strategically the wiser choice: the islands are more easily landed on, the locals were still putting up an active resistance (Taiwan was with Japan even longer than the Philippines was with the US), and it offers more area to gain 🇵ðŸ‡

There's one major battlespace that wasn't mentioned: underground. Aerial drones have a harder time maneuvering in confined isolated spaces, so an increasing number of human movements could take place in the utility tunnels, subterranean malls, and deep building interiors where surprises (even for robots) may lurk at every corner.

Right, America is pretty inept at the what makes an empire an empire: colonialism. The only times we were successful at forceful takeover was either by absorbing the locals (Native Americans and Hawaii), or granting full sovereign independence with a reduced force remaining by agreement (Cuba, Philippines, Japan, South Korea, Germany).

It has to be bogged down by politics, if the military were free to pursue its own agenda it would just expand the list of potential "enemies" until it's everyone not in the same uniform. Our civilian police forces themselves are already paid not to trust you, let's not empower a military junta on top of that.
